Makhura declares West Rand a Covid-19 hotspot

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has confirmed that Johannesburg’s West Rand has been declared a Covid-19 hotspot.
This comes after AngloGold Ashanti's Mponeng Mine recorded 164 cases of the virus, bringing the number of cases in the area to 286.
Makhura was speaking at Sibanye-Stillwater in Carltonville on Wednesday, a mine which also recorded 7 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
"From the provincial point of view the West Rand is going to be a hotspot and we will direct all the necessary support to this area. We will also be asking for national support to help ensure we contain the spread of the virus, particularly in the mines," he said.

Makhura confirmed one of the mining companies has donated a field hospital, with 200 beds, to the provincial government.
"There are mining houses that have hospitals and clinics and we want these resources to be used as we plan. We are now treating these resources together with the private and public sector hospitals and clinics in the West Rand are being treated as one resource," he said.
