Makhura: Gauteng not yet out of the Covid woods

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has expressed concern over the number of men in the province who are seemingly reluctant to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

He visited the mining sector in the West Rand on Friday to assess employer-based vaccination sites.

Makhura says 57% of vaccines were administered to women.

“I am concerned about men, there are more women being vaccinated than men, 57 % of all the vaccination has been administered to women. What we have also seen is that the burden of this disease is now shifting to the male.

“We had this problem during the first wave it was mostly male who were succumbing to Covid-19  and then it shifted to women on the second wave, but then women are now responding to the vaccination. We are very concerned about men, those who are not vaccinating, we will have a fourth wave and most of them will be affected.”

Makhura says despite the drop in the infection rate the province is not yet out of the woods.

“Our province is doing extremely well in terms of getting out of the third wave. We are experiencing a significant decline, the number of cases on a week to week basis we have seen 25% decline but we are still on a third wave we have to reach a certain average in the threshold.

“I am concerned about the numbers of the past 24 hours. I saw that we went back to 2000, but overall the numbers are showing us that the province has passed the peak of the third wave, the hospitalisation is also declining but we are still very concerned with the number of people succumbing to the virus.”
