Makhura: South Africans should be grateful for living in a democracy
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Gauteng Premier David Makhura says even though a lot of freedoms still need to be realised, South Africans should be grateful for living a democracy.
Makhura and members of civil society, along with the South African Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), laid wreaths at the Phelindaba Cemetery as part of Human Rights Day celebrations.
The day also commemorates the deaths of 69 people, who were shot by the Apartheid police in Sharpeville during a protest against pass laws.
The PAC's Kenny Motsemai, who was recently granted parole after spending 27 years in prison for killing a white traffic officer, says Human Rights Day is an important day for all Africans
Learners also had the opportunity to interact with South Africans who took part in the march in 1960
