Gauteng Premier David Makhura says he wants to declare the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospitalin Johannesburg a local state of disaster.
Makhura briefed the media on the latest Covid-19 provincial data in the south of Johannesburg on Friday.
The premier said Gauteng cannot afford to have Charlotte Maxeke closed down in winter during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We cannot have it closed at all, in the last few weeks we have been working day in and day out, doing everything that the hospital is reopened in a safe manner.
"We can only respond deceivingly and effecting to where we are in the pandemic, with a functioning Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital - the longer it stays closed there are clinical risks," said Makhura.
The premier stressed the sooner the hospital opens, there better the province is placed to tackle the pandemic.
The hospital was closed down after it was gutted ablaze in April this year.
The cancer treatment at the hospital was supposed to be open this week, the premier told the media the City of Johannesburg is busy with inspections of the cancer wing before it is opened to the public.
