Makwarela will be remembered as ‘honest man’ - family

The family of former Tshwane mayor, Murunwa Makwarela, says they will remember him as an honest man who loved God.

Makwarela passed away on Tuesday morning at Leratong hospital in Randfontein after a short illness.

He was 52.

Family spokesperson, Reverend Abel Dube, said the former Congress of the People councillor would be remembered for his hard work.

"He preached on Sunday at church. On Monday he was very well but later in the evening he was like not feeling well, and he was rushed to the hospital. He was there throughout the night, and he passed on the morning.

"He lived by example even to his congregation, a prayerful man - a man who loved God and a man who loved people. He shall be remembered for his honesty and his steadfastness.

Tshwane Council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana said the city has lost an important person.

"He was a former speaker, former mayor, and councillor of Tshwane. It is indeed a sad day for the councillors, staff, communities, and the Office of the Speaker because he is my predecessor. It is a sad day for us because we have lost an important person."

Makwarela was granted R10 000 bail, earlier this month, after pleading not guilty to charges of fraud in the Specialised Crimes Court in Pretoria.

His court appearance followed the submission of an apparent fake insolvency clearance certificate to the City of Tshwane.

He used the certificate, which he said was issued by the High Court in Pretoria, to prove that he had should remain mayor.

The court subsequently issued a memorandum disputing his claim that it has issued a certificate clearing the 2016 insolvency status.

The former mayor resigned after the revelation but always maintained his innocence.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
