Malema calling for early election
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
EFF leader Julius Malema is calling for early elections to remove President Jacob Zuma.
"If we don't go to early elections, if we don't remove the President you are showing the constitution a middle finger. That is the end of constitutional democracy," says Malema.
He was addressing supporters outside the Newcastle Magistrates Court where he made a first brief appearance on charges related to the contravention of the Riotous Assemblies Act of 1956.
"Look at what's happening in this country. People sit and say Malema is a problem, what can we do to silence him? They charge him with Riotous Assemblies Act of 1956. This Act was passed in 1956 as a response to the Freedom Charter, which was adopted in 1955. The Freedom Charter said people must occupy the land wherever they choose to occupy the land," says Malema.
Malema's legal team has until 7 December to bring an application in the High Court to test the constitutionality of the law used to charge him.
Malema says their fight is not just aimed at government.
"We, the rightful owners, our peace was disturbed by the white man's arrival here. We are not calling for the slaughtering of white people, at least for now. What we are calling for is for peaceful occupation of the land," says Malema.
