Malema: Mashatile, Makhura must pay back Alex money
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema believes the whereabouts of the money meant for the Alexandra Renewal Project is known to ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile and Gauteng premier.

Malema addressed EFF supporters at a packed San Kopano stadium in Alexandra on Wednesday.
“Alexandra turned 100 years, billions were put in Alex and when Makhura was asked, he said:’ will investigate’. What a stupid answer. Where is the money of Alexandra renewal? We never get tired of asking the ANC, where is the money?
“Mashatile is a mini-Zuma, he must pay back the money. Like their father did. Makhura must pay back the money and (Gauteng economic development MEC Lebogang Maile’s brother) Mike Maile must pay back the money. It is those three who know what happened to that money,” said Malema.
The Alexandra Renewal Project hit the headlines after Alexandra residents took to the streets to complain about poor service delivery.
Alexandra was allocated over R1.2 billion during former President Thabo Mbeki’s tenure to improve the township’s physical, social and economic aspect in the area.
However, the community has little to show for it, and questions have been asked about the missing billions.
Neither the ANC nor the DA are willing to take responsibility for the unfolding crisis in Alexandra but are rather pointing fingers at each other.
While the ANC is hell-bent on retaining Gauteng, the DA is determined to snatch the country’s economic hub away from the ANC, with coalitions a distinct possibility for both parties.
While the EFF is open to coalitions, Malema says there is only one condition before engaging any of the parties.
