Gauteng Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo has warned motorists not to travel at night during the upcoming festive season.

Thousands of South Africans are expected to travel to their respective destinations ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Mamabolo launched the provincial road safety campaign in Krugersdorp on Monday.
“Now you are drinking alcohol and going to parties. You decide you are going to drink and you do not check the time. It is raining outside, it is in the middle of the night, heavy rain, you cannot see, you are drunk, you are not wearing your mask and you are busy texting on the phone,” he warned.
“Plan your trips and it is always better to drive during the day because your visibility is optimised. It is better and you can see. Now imagine at night with the rain, plan your trips and planning your trips must also include, do you really have to travel?”
Mamabolo also expressed concern over the number of unlicensed drivers on the province’s road, saying it is one of the main causes of crashes on the road.
“Remember that on the road we have other drivers who bought their learners and drivers’ licenses, they bribed to get them, and they did not learn anything when it comes to driving.
“When they go to the road and make mistakes, they bribe and when the time of accident happens, you can’t bribe. You can bribe to get all your documents and throughout, but when an accident comes, accidents don’t get bribes.”
