Man appears in court for ‘trafficking’ 50 Ethiopian nationals

A 50-year-old man accused of trafficking at least 50 Ethiopian nationals appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Ahmed Kafecho also faces alternative counts of attempted extortion and kidnapping following claims that the accused demanded money from the families of the men held captive, in exchange for their release.
This comes after police pounced on a house in Zakariyya Park, south of Johannesburg, last week Thursday where the Ethiopian nationals were rescued during an undercover operation.
The men, aged between 12 and 50, are believed to be victims of a human trafficking ring.
It is not yet known how long the group were trapped inside the house.
"The rescued men are currently being processed by the Department of Home Affairs to determine their status in the country," says spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Gauteng, Phindi Mjonondwane.
The case was postponed to 25 October for further investigations and a possible bail hearing.
