Police found the woman’s body in the bedroom of her Heemstede, Groenvallei, home on Friday at 16:00, confirmed provincial police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

“The deceased’s arms were tied behind her back [and she had suffered] head injuries.  A case of murder and robbery was opened and the investigation led to the arrest of a  42-year-old suspect,” she said.

An officer close to the investigation told News24 that the body was discovered after police traced a Hyundai found abandoned in Bloekombos.

“When the members arrived at the vehicle owner’s home, there was no answer at her door. A neighbour had a spare key which they handed over and the elderly woman’s body was found inside the house,” the officer confirmed.

Further investigations revealed that the roof of the woman’s home had recently been repaired, and that two men who had worked on site were questioned.

"During a search at the home of one of the employees, the murdered woman’s driver’s licence and car keys along with a pair of binoculars and computer monitor were found.”

The man is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.
