A man has been arrested after abducting two girls (aged 5 and 6 years) in New Brighton in Port Elizabeth.

The girls were abducted on Wednesday while playing in the streets at the Chris Hani township.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says the girls' parents got worried when the two children did not return home by 18:00.
"They eventually contacted police who launched a massive search involving police helicopters and the K9-unit,'' says Beegte.
Police and the community managed to locate the 6-year-old shortly after midnight.
"The 6-year-old girl was found severely assaulted with stab wounds to her head," adds Beegte.

She managed to give police information which eventually led to the suspect's home.
"We found the 5-year-old girl before 05:00 on Thursday, in the suspect's bed," adds Beegte.
Police are investigating a case of attempted murder, abduction and possible rape - depending on the outcome of a medical examination.
The two children are also receiving trauma counselling.
