"It is alleged that three suspects robbed a 55-year-old male at the corner [of] Hoek and De Villiers streets on February 14... at 5.55pm," said Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

"[The] victim was on his way to catch a taxi home when he was pushed to the corner by the suspects; one of them threatened him with a knife while his accomplices searched him."

They took his cellphone before they fled the scene. The man shouted for help, alerting police officers nearby.

Police then arrested a 21-year-old man in possession of a knife, but the two other escaped.

The man was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
