A man has been arrested for illegal mining and trespassing in Florida, on the West Rand, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
A man has been arrested for illegal mining and trespassing in Florida, on the West Rand, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
"Florida SAPS responded to a call from a local resident about a group [of people] with dangerous weapons," spokeswoman Colonel Noxolo Kweza said.
"We arrested a 33-year-old man who was found at the scene."
The man was found in the veld between Hamberg and Main Reef Road, believed to be an illegal mining ground. Kweza said the man indicated to officers that he was working underground. "He was arrested for trespassing and illegally mining," she said.
It was not known how many people were still underground, but a team of rescuers was being sent down to investigate.
