Man arrested for vandalising Queen Victoria statue
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed that a 24-year-old man had been arrested and was expected to appear in court on Monday.
The Queen Victoria statue, which has stood outside the citys main library since 1905, was covered in green paint last week.
Video footage captured from CCTV cameras in the city centre shows a white male, apparently acting alone, climbing out of a vehicle just after 23:00 on Thursday evening and throwing paint on the statue.
He then climbed back into the vehicle and drove off.
The damage was later discovered later by guards on patrol in the area, and reported to authorities.
The CCTV footage has been handed over to the police forensics team.
