Man burnt to death in vigilante killing in Giyani

A man who was on the run from police after he allegedly burnt a pensioner to death in an act of witchcraft has in turn been burnt to death by an angry vigilante mob in Rotterdam near Giyani, police in Limpopo said on Monday.

The police said they arrested two of the man's alleged accomplices after an 82-year-old woman in the community was burnt to death at the weekend.

"It is alleged that the suspects took the deceased forcefully from her house to another house in Rotterdam village and killed her… the motive is suspected to be that of witchcraft," said lieutenant colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

On Sunday night, Ngoepe said, members of the community then caught the third suspect and dragged him to the local cemetery where they set him on fire.

"Last night community members mobilised and traced this third suspect until they caught him, dragged him until next to the local cemetery and burnt him to death."

A case of murder has been opened following the vigilante killing but so far nobody has been arrested, he added.

The two men who were arrested for killing the elderly woman will appear before the Tiyani Magistrate court soon on a charge of murder. - ANA
