A man drowned after he was swept away when he attempted to ride his quad bike across a flooded bridge on Eisenhower Street in Klipriver, outside Johannesburg, ER24 said in a statement on Tuesday.
Russel Meiring, ER24 Spokesperson, said paramedics were called to the scene on Monday afternoon after reports were received of a man being washed down river.
“Paramedics arrived on the scene at 14h20 where they found the low-water bridge flooded. An ATV (all-terrain vehicle, also known as a quad bike), was found lying in the rushing water. Paramedics and police could find no sign of the driver,” said Meiring.
Search and rescue teams were called to the scene.
“After a few hours, the body of the man was found some distance down river. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries.”
The man was declared dead on scene.
It is believed that the man attempted to cross the flooded bridge on his ATV when he was swept away.
Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
