City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the incident took place at one of the power utility’s electricity towers around Hopefield near Lenasia.

“It is believed the deceased was killed when he tried to climb the 88KV electricity tower. It is not clear why he climbed up but vandalism, which is rife in the area, is suspected.”

Mangena says at least four City Power substations lost power as a result of the incident.

These include the Hopefield substation, as well as Ennerdale, Lunar and Lenasia south stations.

Technicians from both Eskom and the power utility are on site to investigate and carry out repairs.

“Police have also taken over the area as a crime scene, which may delay the repairs and restorations,” says Mangena.

“It is still not clear how long it will take for repairs to be done and power restored. We will communicate to the residents as and when information becomes available.”
