A man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted and killed a metro police officer in Daveyton on the East Rand on Sunday morning, Ekurhuleni metro police said.
The man, a businessman in his mid-thirties, hit the officer with the fist when the metro police officers were towing his caravan, Chief Supt. Wilfred Kgasago said.
The man was allegedly operating his food stall in an area where he was not supposed to.
"The metro police officers were following on the letter of notice issued to the owner on March 13, to stop plying his trade at the spot called 'Esihlahleni' at the entrance of Daveyton from the N12 East," Kgasago said.
"When the officers tried to arrest the owner of the caravan, he lashed out with a fist on one of the officers who fell and landing with the back of his head on the ground."
The officer died at the scene after the colleagues and paramedics tried to resuscitate him.
The man was arrested for assault and resisting arrest.
Police spokeswoman Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said a case of murder was being investigated.
