Manana assault probe escalated
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
The cases involving disgraced African National Congress (ANC) MP Mduduzi Manana have been forwarded to the police's Provincial Investigations Unit (PIU).
Previously convicted of assault, the former deputy minister of higher education is embroiled in another assault claim.
The latest charged was laid, and later retracted, by his former domestic worker Christine Wiro.
A voice clip went viral of him allegedly trying to bribe Wiro with R100 000, should she drop the assault charge against him.
But Manana has now responded by laying a charge of perjury against Wiro.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) also this week laid charges of extortion, corruption and bribery against Manana.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Mathapelo Peters, the cases brought against Manana have been transferred to the PIU.
Peters says the docket has not yet been handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and no deadlines have been set as "we don't want to rush into anything or cut corners".

According to legal expert, Professor James Grant, a solid case exists but it all rests on the intention of Manana when he offered the alleged bribe to his former domestic worker.
