The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) dismissed an appeal by Mandela's former wife, Winnie Madikizela Mandela, claiming ownership of a house of the former president in Qunu in the Eastern Cape on Friday.

The SCA held that the Eastern Cape High Court was correct after dismissing her claim on the basis that too much time had lapsed before filling the application.

Mandela died in 2013 and left the house to the Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Family Trust.

Mandela, in a statement on behalf of the Royal House of Mandela, says he is happy to close this chapter.

"The Supreme Court of Appeal has spoken, and we welcome the judgement it has delivered regarding the residence of uTatomkhulu President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. We believe that this outcome respects the last wishes of iNkosi Dalibhunga and is in accordance with his last will and testament."

The legal battle for the former struggle hero's property started in October 2014.

"We are pleased to close this chapter of this saga and trust that it finally puts this matter to rest," says Mandela.
