Sono’s appointment as the airline’s business rescue practitioner follows a court ruling placing Mango under voluntary business rescue earlier this week amid financial and operational challenges.

Earlier this year, the airline was grounded by the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) after failing to pay landing and take-off fees.

Staff members were also without salaries.

While the judgement ruled in favour of the airline’s application for voluntary business rescue; unions remain opposed to the move.

Board chairperson Bembe Zwane says it’s in the best interest of the business.

“The decision is good news for all stakeholders in the aviation industry, as it brings certainty to the process that will unfold to rescue Mango and ensure we have a sustainable asset that will service the low-cost airline market in the country.

“As we finalise certain pertinent aspects of this process, including all other outstanding issues which will be communicated shortly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders including both internal and external customers for your patience and understanding until now.”

Zwane believes the airline, a subsidiary of SAA, would be able to take off soon.

“We urge all to embrace this process to ensure that it achieves its sole purpose which is, for the business to be rescued,” Zwane adds.

“We plan to resume normal operations as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
