Manhunt launched after body found in burnt-out car in Modimolle

The police in Modimolle have launched a massive manhunt for unknown suspects after a body of a person burned beyond recognition was found inside a burnt-out BMW motor vehicle in the bush along the N1 freeway between Modimolle and Bela-Bela in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to the police's Motlafela Mojapelo, they were contacted by the fire and rescue services after they were alerted by a passerby about a motor vehicle that was one fire.


"The Police reacted swiftly and when they arrived, the fire and rescue services personnel had already extinguished the burning vehicle," said Mojapelo. 


"Police then commenced with the investigations and that's when they discovered the body of a person in the driver's seat."


During further investigations, a gun was discovered in the grass a few metres away from the scene.


"It is believed that the deceased might have been shot before the assailants set the vehicle on fire," said Mojapelo. 


The circumstances that led to this incident are still being investigated.


"The process of determining the identity of the deceased through DNA is still unfolding and the recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic examination."
