Mantashe extends public comment on mining charter

Minister of Mineral Resources
Gwede Mantashe has extended the period for public comment on the mining charter
by a month.

The original deadline for comment was July 27 but the public will now have until the end of August to give their input.
Mantashe made the announcement on the second day of two day mining summit in Benoni, saying that government will not rush the process to draw up a final charter.
He said it was necessary to extend the deadline due to the number of comments that need to be taken into consideration.
"We will extend the period of public comment by a month. It will do no harm. People will comment more and engage more. We will extend the period to the end of August.
"We are in the process of post-drafting which will take us to October, November. We must now go to the more involved government processes, including the approval of the charter by cabinet before gazetting it."
The minister also called on black businesses to join and grow their participation in the mining industry.
