Mantashe: Give mineworkers seats on board, shares
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has advocated for mineworkers to be represented on mining companies' boards and for them to be given shares.
Mantashe attended the memorial service for the seven mineworkers who died at the Sibanye Stillwater Mine in Driefontein in Johannesburg last week.
He applauded the thousands working underground in one of the country's most lucrative industries.
"It is difficult, it is dangerous, it is dirty and it is diseased. In everything we do appreciate the nature of the industry itself that it is not like mixing syrup and water, and produce cool drink - it is dangerous, it is diseased."

Mantashe said he's talks on the mining charter continues and will include more stringent transformation requirements.
"It is your mine, you are working here, you must sit on that board; understand the details of the decisions you will influence the direction of the company.
"As I am leaving I am going to Rustenburg to discuss about the charter regarding shares. The employer must provide shares to the employees. Workers must have a seat in the board so that they have insight of the discussion and debates of the company."
