ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe on Wednesday said that the outgoing Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, "saved us from ourselves."

Speaking during a farewell dinner for Thuli Madonsela, Mantashe said that the ANC will miss her visits and difficult questions.

"It was always an open visit and we had to answer very difficult questions. We are hoping that this culture will continue when you leave," Mantashe said.

He also added that the Public Protector gave the ruling party a "run for their money" from time to time.

"That goes hand in hand with running the country," Mantashe said.

This comes amid reports that Madonsela will question President Jacob Zuma, under oath, regarding the controversial Gupta family's role in appointing cabinet ministers.

Mantashe also said that without the ANC, Madonsela's term as Public Protector would not have been as exciting as it was.

"Every reports by the Public Protector made us think. It became a point of learning and we appreciate every single reports by the public protector," Mantashe sad.

He concluded that Madonsela has made the ANC a better party.

"You leave the ANC a wiser party, as you go..." he said.
