Maqubela to be sentenced for husband's murder

The sentencing of Thandi Maqubela for the murder of her husband, acting judge Patrick Maqubela, is expected to continue in the Cape Town High Court on Thursday.

She was convicted of his murder and of forging his signature on a document purporting to be his will.

Her husband Patrick Maqubela, who she said had been a serial cheater, was found dead on his bed in his Sea Point flat on June 5, 2009, apparently a day after saying he wanted a divorce.

She was convicted in November last year, despite the court not being presented with conclusive medical evidence pinpointing a cause of death.

Instead the court found that Maqubela's conduct, a plethora of lies and her persistence in "irrational subterfuge", were wholly incompatible with an innocent person.

Her co-accused and former business colleague, Vela Mabena, had previously been acquitted on a murder charge because the evidence against him was not as strong.

On Monday, the matter was postponed to Thursday as Maqubela had hired a new defence team.

Prosecutor Bonnie Currie-Gamwo told the court this was the third time Maqubela's sentencing had appeared on the court roll.

Judge John Murphy noted her concerns of further delays.
