Marikana shootout leaves cop fatally wounded

One suspect is expected in court soon after a shootout with police in North West left an officer fatally wounded last week.

It’s understood police in Marikana were on the hunt for suspects allegedly responsible for committing serious and violent crimes in the area. 


The suspects were at their hide-out when they spotted the police and fled on foot. 


The officers also gave chase on foot. 


Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said a shootout ensued between the two groups. 


“A 30-year-old suspect was wounded and arrested. The suspect who is currently under police guard in hospital, was found in possession of 9mm Norinco pistol loaded with two ammunition.”

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said the car tracking company alerted the police of the location of the stolen vehicle at the border. He adds this led to the police searching for the stolen bakkie.

Mokgwabone added that the Hawks are investigating. 


“The Provincial Commissioner who has since mobilised the 72-hour activation plan in an effort to track the remaining suspects, conveyed his condolences to the member’s family, relatives and colleagues.  


“He pointed out that killing of police officers is totally unacceptable and will never be tolerated as that does not only affect the much needed service delivery, but also undermines the authority of the state.”
