Marshalltown fire suspect to appear in court on Thursday

A 29-year-old man linked to the Usindiso Building fire is expected to make his first appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.
His appearance in the dock comes amid calls for the drug lord, whom he implicated during his confession at the commission of inquiry into the Usindiso fire, also to be arrested.
The suspect, known only as Mr X, faces 76 counts of murder, 120 counts of attempted murder and arson, after he told the Usindiso Commission of Inquiry that he lit the fire when he tried to conceal the body of a man he’d killed moments before the deadly inferno; allegedly on instruction from the alleged drug kingpin.
The South African Federation of Trade Union’s (Saftu) Trevor Shaku said while they welcome the confession, the motive for the damning revelation should also be questioned.
“The first question we’re asking is what could have been the cause for such an individual to confess about murder and implicate himself in the murder of 76 other people who burned in that building?”
“The witness also claimed several drug-related murders had taken place in one of the rooms in the building.
“It’s important that law enforcement and the courts make sure that not only the person who murdered and started the fire is incarcerated. We want, not only the individual, we the people behind him arrested also,” Shaku said.
