He says R150 million has been set aside to clean informal settlements and R50 million has also been allocated to PikitUp to keep the inner city clean.

Mashaba was speaking at Mshenguville Park in Soweto where he participated in the #WasteStopsWithMe clean-up campaign.

“Residents and stakeholders alike must learn to reduce, reuse and recycle to preserve the environment. This partnership will also enable Miss Earth South Africa to activate school and community educational programmes which will support the strategic gaols of PikitUp and the city,” says Mashaba.

He also says the city will no longer provide free water to everybody.

“According to studies our supply of water will continue to be under serious threat and it is for this reason that the city’s proposed average tariff increase of 12.2% for the 2017/18 financial year emphasises the importance of water as a scarce resource. The city will follow the trend across all metros in the country, to no longer provide free basic water to all residents. Depending on household income, our poorest residents will receive between 10 and 15 kilolitres of free water per household per month."
