Mashaba: Luthuli House employee arrested for cash heist

Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba says a suspect allegedly working at the African National Congress (ANC) head quarters, Luthuli House, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a cash-in-transit heist.

"I have received confirmation that one of the four suspects arrested is alleged to work at Luthuli House, at the time of his arrest," reads a statement by Mashaba's office.

Police spokesperson, Brenda Muridili, could not confirm Mashaba's claim, saying "several arrests were made in Dobsonville for cash-in-transit heists".

Police say more than 20 suspected cash robbers were arrested in Soweto last week.

"The arrest of this individual does bring into question whether the ANC has been aware of the arrest of this individual and, if so, why they have remained silent on such an important matter," Mashaba further alleges.

The ANC could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, a suspect has been arrested for a robbery at a filling station in Douglasdale on Tuesday.

According to Muridili, two security officers were robbed by two gunmen after they collected money.

The alleged criminals then made their way to informal settlement, Diepsloot.

"They cordoned off the area near Diepsloot, forcing the suspects to abandon their vehicle, which will be processed to determine the ownership and whether it is stolen or hijacked. The police found an unlicensed rifle inside the vehicle," says Muridili.

In a bid to curb cash-in-transit heists, Police Minister Bheki Cele has indicated that 100 new high performance vehicles will be spread across the country in June.
