Mashaba seeks urgent Eskom meeting
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba wants to meet with power utility Eskom within the next 48 hours.
This comes amid a threat by Eskom to stop supplying electricity to areas where residents fail to pay their accounts.
Mashaba’s spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says the mayor has received several complaints from Soweto residents.
"It is also alleged that Eskom has resolved not to maintain or repair their own infrastructure in areas where there are high levels of non-payment of Eskom accounts,' says Mfeka.
The areas include Diepsloot and Soweto.
Mfeka says should the power utility stay true to its word it would be tantamount to a blanket punishment.
Mfeka adds that Mashaba will turn to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) should Eskom fail to honour his request for a meeting.
