Mashaba to take Guptas to court
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba will approach the courts
to challenge the controversial Gupta family’s alleged corruption and
racism.
Mashaba
said in a statement on Sunday that he is taking legal action in his personal
capacity.
After reading ‘Indentured: Behind the Scenes at Gupta TV’ by journalist Rajesh Sundaram, Mashaba wrote an open letter to National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams, giving him 60 days to take action against the Guptas.
The book
details alleged corrupt activities and racism by members of the family.
"To date I have received no response from him or the National Prosecuting Authority. To me, it is clear that Abrahams does not regard the allegations against the Guptas as serious," Mashaba says.

Mashaba says a court of law needs to take a closer look at the allegations. He has also engaged South Africans employed by the family.
"Whilst these employees have requested, for now, that their identities remain protected from the media, they have indicated to me their willingness to come forward and relay their horrific accounts at the hands of the Guptas and their associates for the purpose of court action.”
Mashaba says he is taking on the case in his personal capacity because it has nothing to do with the city.
"I took over this matter this matter in my personal capacity as a black South African and a proud one for that matter.”
