Mashaba vows to rebuild demolished Alex homes, blames ‘evil forces’

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has promised residents of Alexandra that the illegal structure, which were demolished by the Red Ants, will be rebuilt.

Mashaba visited the area on Monday after some 80 homes were illegally destroyed by the Red Ants on Friday.

"On behalf of the City of Johannesburg, I apologise profoundly. What happened was not ordered by the city. The city must make a plan in the next coming weeks, to rebuild these homes," Mashaba said.

Mashaba said it is still unclear who ordered the Red Ants to demolish the homes, despite the Gauteng police confirming that the order came from the city.

"Evil forces are behind this, but one thing I know is that evil forces are behind this, I am not particularly saying the ANC.

“I think it makes me even angrier when you refer to that court order which was issued in September 2016.  We took over government a month before so you can understand to get a court order how long it took, that is why we never implemented that court order and you check with the police when they gave me the report, the people who were responsible for that decision did not make the decision based on a court order,” he said.
