Masina vows another bid to oust Campbell ‘if the moment arises’

The ANC’s Ekurhuleni regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina says while they accept the outcome of Tuesday’s mayoral vote, they will table another no-confidence motion against reinstalled mayor Tania Campbell should the opportunity present itself.

Campbell was re-elected as mayor of Ekurhuleni nearly two weeks after she was booted out through an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence.

The ANC accused the DA-led coalition of neglecting service delivery in townships.

“If a moment arises again and anytime the balance of forces changes, we will put a motion because we know that our most vulnerable communities will not get services from her,” Masina said.

This while Campbell has dismissed the claims as frivolous and untrue.

“The notion that I am not in townships is really a notion. I spent 80% of my time in townships. But at the end of the day, as a mayor I look at Ekurhuleni as a collective and we have to concentrate on the poorest of the poor.”

The mayor has admitted the metro is under financial strain.

Meanwhile, Masina said there was no deal between them and the EFF and warned against reducing the failed takeover to the collapse of their negotiations.

“Please stop this notion of wanting to link the ANC with the EFF. We are opponents, we are not enemies.”

The EFF sealed Campbell’s return after talks between them and the ANC collapsed when the red berets reportedly demanded total control of the metro, in return for their support of the ANC.

While the ANC was in talks with several parties, Masina would not reveal who rejected their proposal for co-governance.

He has accused some parties of being “hell-bent” on getting the mayoral chain.

“What we saw was a very extreme level of arrogance in the negotiations which we had to salvage the pride of the ANC.”

The EFF said their candidate, Nkululeko Dunga, withdrew his name from the candidate list because it would have been ‘illogical’ to stand against the two main parties in council.
