SANDF spokesperson Sphiwe Dlamini says the donations came from the Chinese Defence Force.

“They were delivered yesterday (Thursday) and we took receipt of them yesterday. They will distributed by our health division to various areas where they are needed.”

Friday marked the first day of the 21-day lockdown across the country, where the troops will play a supporting role to the police in enforcing the lockdown.

The three-week period started with the news that two people in the Western Cape died due to COVID-19.

These were South Africa’s first coronavirus deaths.

The number of infected persons have also risen above 1000.

Dlamini reiterated calls to South Africans to stay at home during this period.

“I would like to urge once more that people should heed the call to remain home in order to save their lives and other people’s lives. Let’s remain home, let’s remain home, lets remain home.”
