Massive swells cause closure of Durban beach
Durban's North Beach has been closed due to extreme weather conditions. Strong south-westerly winds have been blowing along the KZN coastline - causing stormy surf on the city's main beaches.
Massive waves have been crashing over the promenade at North Beach since Sunday afternoon - with lifeguards declaring the popular spot for beach revellers a no-go area.
It's believed that the harsh weather is a result of Cyclone Enawo - which battered the coast of Madagascar this week, causing devastation there - and has since affected the weather system in Durban.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says the beach has been closed to swimmers - due to the danger posed by the massive swells.
"Currently on North Beach, outside Wimpy, where the cyclone has affected the waves are crashing over the promenade. The beach has been closed to bathers, and lifeguards are on the promenade monitoring people," he said.
It's believed that the waves reached up to 10 feet.
