The council is expected to regulate all legal practitioners, candidate legal practitioners and juristic entities.

Masutha says the council will start operating on the 1st of November.

"Will exist as a national body with provincial structures throughout the nine provinces in the country," says Masutha.

He adds the provincial structures will only be established after the national body has been finalised.

Masutha says the council will replace the four statutory provincial law societies.

"Which have to date fulfilled the dual purpose of regulating and representing attorneys."

When the council is established, the Bar associations will no longer have the responsibility to regulate the law profession.

"The Legal Practice Act requires that the council reflects the country’s gender and racial demographics in all its structures,” says Masutha.
