Limpopo to manage departments again, except education
Updated | By Maidi Monareng
National government has decided to withdraw its administration of the provincial government in Limpopo. All departments are now back in provincial hands, except for the education department.
Premier Stan Mathabatha said in his State of the Province Address the education department granted a conditional withdrawal.
The education department has constantly been in the spotlight for its many failures, including the inability to deliver textbooks on time.
Premier Mathabatha said the conditional withdrawal is due to the outstanding challenges the department was still facing.
"The department of education is the only department out of the five that were placed under Section 100(1)(b) which did not respond to the intervention mechanism," he said.
Mathabatha said the department never responded positively.
The Limpopo departments of Health, Public works, Roads and Transport, Treasury and Education were placed under administration in 2011 because of financial mismanagement.
