Johannesburg Mayor Jolidee Matongo (46) has been described as a servant who wanted a better life for the poor and marginalised people of the city.

Matongo’s funeral service was held at the Finetown Community Hall, south of Johannesburg on Friday.

Speaker after speaker paid tribute to Matongo, describing him as a humble, loving, and caring husband, father, and brother.

Long-time friend and colleague ANC provincial secretary Jacob Khawe bid farewell, saying Matongo was committed to the struggle and was one of the greatest amongst their generation.

The ANC Joburg region secretary Dada Morero added Matongo was very disciplined within the ANC.

“Comrades we must pick up where Jolidee left, do justice to his legacy and dedicate the next elections to a man who died in service to his people, we will emerge victorious because he is watching us, he has left a void that will never be filled.”

The ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile said they were expecting a lot from Matongo.

“He served wholeheartedly, he put the interest of the people first, we counted him amongst the finest within our ranks, in him we saw a bright future for our country and our movement.”

Gauteng Premier David Makhura also paid tribute to Matongo by saying he wanted service delivery issues addressed immediately.

“He dealt with many issues of infrastructure, township economy, taking the youth out of drugs, the cleanliness of the city or dealing with potholes and he gave us so much hope as the province.”

Matongo died in a car crash on Saturday on the Golden Highway on his way home from Soweto where he was campaigning for the ANC alongside president Cyril Ramaphosa. Two more people were killed in the collision.

Matongo was laid to rest at West Park cemetery in Johannesburg.
