Matric 2017: Meet the national top learner

As matriculants learn of their performance in 2017, a student from Cape Town managed to out-perform all of her peers.

Janke van Dyk from Hoerskool Bellvile in Cape Town has been named as the top national achiever in the 2017 matric examinations.


An estatic Van Dyk says her achievements are completely unexpected, but that it was due to hard work and perseverance. 


"I am going to study this year at the University of Stellenbosch. I will study chemical engineering. I had a sharp interestence in physical science and life science throughout my school career and and I believe that will feed my interest and I can't wait to learn.

She admits that the exams were not without its challenges.  


"It was just the amount of work that we had to do in such a short space of time and also to make enough time for every subject during the exams to prepare properly."


Her mother, Zenobie van Dyk, says it is difficult to describe the joy she is feeling at her daughter's achievements. 


"I can't tell you how we feel. She worked hard. But they told us when she was little that she is very gifted. Since grade 4 she has been the top achiever in her grade 'till matric."
