Mawela 'satisfied' with progress of Boksburg tanker explosion investigation

Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela says he’s satisfied with the progress that has been made in the ongoing Boksburg tanker explosion investigation.

Police have assembled an investigation team that comprises detectives, legal services, and forensic services to probe the deadly explosion.


The team led by Mbuso Khumalo has formulated a prosecutorial-guided investigation plan.


Mawela received an update from the team regarding the investigations into the Boksburg explosion.


“I would like to assure the public that this investigation is receiving priority and I am satisfied with the progress that has been made by the team so far,” said Mawela.


The 32-year-old man who drove the gas tanker that exploded on Christmas Eve in Plantation has been released from custody due to outstanding evidence.


Police are yet to complete the case docket and send it to the NPA for a decision on whether to prosecute or not.


The death toll following the horror blast has increased to 34.
