Mayoral election will go ahead, pledges De Gama

Johannesburg council speaker Vasco de Gama is confident that the election of a new mayor will go ahead without a hitch on Wednesday.
This comes after De Gama postponed proceedings on Thursday due to what he described as a lack of clarity on what constitutes a majority in council.
Members of the council could not agree on what constitutes a majority vote when it comes to numbers in council, with most saying a majority is 50% + 1.
Speaking on Monday, De Gama maintained that the meeting will go ahead and there will not be another postponement, as this will result in wasteful expenditure.
"We have sent out the notice and announced the meeting. I have also asked councillors to bring their agendas with."
De Gama has also described threats to suspend him by Gauteng MEC for Human Settlement Lebogang Maile as “uncalled for”.
On Friday, Maile wrote a letter to De Gama requesting representations from him as to why he should not be suspended or removed as a councillor due to the postponement of the council meeting meant to elect a new mayor.
