The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula says he has has noted weekend media reports on alleged attempts to get the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to settle approximately R6 billion on contracts that have been found wanting by the Public Protector and the Special Investigative Unit (SIU).

In a statement, Mbalula said that in the coming days he will be engaging with the Department and Prasa on charting a course to return the entity to operational stability and improving the quality of the passenger rail service, building on the progress made by his predecessor.

"This engagement will include all issues investigated by both the Public Protector and the SIU," said the statement.

He goes on to say that the rule of law is sacrosanct and that adherence to provisions of the law is non-negotiable.  He maintains that where officials are found to have flouted the law in the procurement of contracts decisive action will be taken.

“Consequence management will underpin all our actions and decisions in order to ensure accountability,” said Mbalula.
