Mbalula: ’New Dawn’ embraced by South Africans

African National Congress (ANC) head of elections Fikile Mbalula is confident the party’s election message has been well-received by voters.

Mbalula was speaking on the sidelines of the ANC’s Siyanqoba Rally at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The rally marks the end of the ANC’s election campaign before voters head to the polls on Wednesday.

“The ‘New Dawn’ has been embraced by all. We are quite optimistic based on our message and our humble approach of focussing on our message. We have been irritated so many times in this campaign and tried to be defocussed. But we had to go down in the wall-to-wall campaign, talk to the people and go exactly where they are.

Mbalula said the ANC deliberately ran a less high-profile campaign this time around, with more focus on door-to-door activities.

“That went well for us. It saw our president leading from the front, including getting into the trains where our people experience difficulties, including breakdowns of trains on a daily basis.

“I mean, that is the story, but also equally the good story of what we have actually delivered. We have seen those as we criss-crossed the country, talking to our people. We’ve been to mud houses, the ugliest face of the story of our democracy, that propels us to say that a lot still needs to be done.

“It’s been a good campaign. Taxing, but we designed it that way.”
