Mbalula: Still no indication if Putin will attend BRICS summit
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the party still doesn't know if Russian President Vladimir Putin will be attending the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg next month.
Putin is amongst the BRICS leaders expected to attend the summit due to be held in Johannesburg.
South Africa is set to host the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and China at the summit from 22 to 24 August.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of war crimes for the alleged unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children.
On Sunday, Mbalula stated that the country stil had not received any confirmation on Putin's attendance.
"Having reflected on both the BRICS Plus Political Parties Dialogue and the BRICS Summit, the NEC resolved to clarify to the public that, whereas the BRICS Summit in August is a government event, the BRICS Plus Political Parties Dialogue is essentially an ANC initiative on political solidarity with political parties from other countries.
"The NEC noted that South Africa has not yet received confirmation on whether or not President Putin intends attending the BRICS Summit, following the ICC verdict against him."
