Mbalula wants SANDF to fight crime in Gauteng and Western Cape

In a statement released by the department, Mbalula says the levels of violent crime in South Africa is making communities feel unsafe.

The most recent incidents of increased violence and shooting incidents and the increase in gangsterism activities in the Western Cape and Gauteng provinces are becoming a matter of huge concern.

Incidents in Gauteng as a whole and the Western Cape province (Cape Town specifically) have been identified as hotspots with violent crimes such as murder, hijackings, assault, rape and drug abuse occurring frequently.

Mbalula says the urgent measure will hopefully brings down the levels of crime in the two provinces.  

"Stabilisation and combating of the these criminal activities are within the mandate of the South African Police Service but due to the large groupings and military training of some of the perpetrators, the South African Defence Force (SANDF) is requested to assist, in the mentioned provinces."
