Mbeki labels hotly-contested ANC conference as ‘defining event’ for SA
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Former president Thabo Mbeki didn’t mince his words when discussing what he perceives to be a lack of leadership in the ANC-led government.
Mbeki described the forthcoming ANC national elective conference as a "defining event in terms of the future of our country".
He made the remarks at an event on Saturday hosted by the Strategic Dialogue Group.
Mbeki has become known for his scathing remarks towards the present-day ANC – and used his speech to once again criticise the lack of leadership under President Cyril Ramaphosa.
He said the ANC was unable to produce a leadership that can reserve the declining economy, the record levels of unemployment, and the millions who remain in poverty.
"Will this conference come up with policies and leadership that can change that?" Mbeki asked.

The political landscape is set to change in December when thousands of ANC delegates are expected to convene at Nasrec in Johannesburg to elect the party’s leadership for the next five years.
Potential candidates and slates have emerged with Lindiwe Sisulu, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Zweli Mkhize availing themselves for the top position of president should a branch nominate them.
"Many comrades who say 'if I am nominated, I am available, please elect me' - and not one of them explains why they must be elected. Why must I elect you? Cause you pretty?"
"You can see particular individuals in our leadership who don't qualify to be in the NEC - must less to be something in government, but they are available to be elected. You see; ‘choose me, elect me’."
