Mboweni says mini budget date likely to move again
Finance Minister Tito Mboweni says this year’s Medium Term Budget Policy Statement is likely to take place earlier than expected.
Mboweni was expected to deliver the much-anticipated mini-budget speech on October 30.
“We had to pull back the date - I’m saying this to avoid rumour-mongering in the market. And the date we are looking at is 29 of October,” Mboweni said in Pretoria on Thursday.
He explained that the date had to be changed in order to accommodate President Cyril Ramaphosa, who might be out of the country on the 30th.
This is the second time the date of the mini-budget could be moved in order to accommodate the president.
The cabinet secretary is expected to announce the official date later on Thursday.
The finance minister was speaking at the third colloquium on the South African economy.
The colloquium, consisting of various experts and analysts, is expected to update Treasury’s recently released economic recovery plan.
The update of the paper is in preparation for the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement.
