McBride has lashed out at the police committee’s decision not to extend his contract as head of the police watchdog.

The committee on Thursday unanimously endorsed the decision by Police Minister Bheki Cele not to renew McBride’s five-year contract at the helm of the police watchdog.

In a statement, McBride said that he will fight tooth and nail for the independence of Ipid.

He described the sitting as “a mere de facto decision of the minister”.

McBride is seeking a fresh decision within 30 days in court papers submitted to the High Court in Pretoria.

The ANC caucus welcomed the decision, saying it believes there had been a “breakdown in trust” between McBride and Cele.

Spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli said the decision was also based on his failure to comply with regulations.

Mhlauli added there are pending investigations into serious allegations of misconduct against McBride by his staff.
