The statement came in response to Lesufi branding SAPS’ failure to attend the funeral of Gauteng Traffic Warden Chesnay Patricia Keppler as “unjustified and uncalled for”.

Lesufi slammed the lack of police presence at Keppler’s funeral, saying that they are the appropriate authority to respond to unanswered questions about her death.

“I strongly believe the South African law enforcement have missed an opportunity to be here today and face the family,” Lesufi said at the funeral on Saturday. "Their absence adds to the misery and pain, and their absence must not be encouraged.”

In a statement on Tuesday, the police ministry stated that it would engage with the Gauteng provincial government during an upcoming meeting to assess the progress of the agreements with the Gauteng metros.

Keppler, a 22-year-old traffic warden, was laid to rest on Saturday in Eldorado Park after succumbing to gunshot wounds on Boxing Day.

Keppler's alleged killer, her 42-year-old police officer boyfriend, Sergeant Mandla Buthelezi, made his first appearance in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday after previously appearing in absentia on December 30 due to being hospitalised following a failed suicide attempt.

Buthelezi remains in police custody while the matter has been postponed to 26 February.

“The Ministry of Police remains dedicated to fostering accountability, transparency, and community trust in law enforcement and reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that justice prevails for Keppler as well as addressing any systemic challenges within the SAPS,” it said.
